Chapter Thirteen

Teri

“Fuck!”

The curse escapes my lips as I bump into a corner of the dining table. The collision makes waves in the bowl of hollandaise sauce I have in my hands, sending some of its contents over the edge to splatter on black velvet.

I stare at the fresh stain in disbelief.

Great. I was wearing an apron for the past two hours and nothing happened. I take it off and a dollop of creamy sauce ends up on my dress.

Note to self: Next time, don’t take off the apron until you’re done setting the table.

Right now, though, it’s too late. The mistake has been made, the damage done, which means I have to clean up this mess and change into a new dress.

I let out an exasperated sigh as I reach for some paper towels. This dress was new, too. I picked it carefully, thinking the low neckline would be a nice homecoming treat for Aaron. That and dinner—salmon with hollandaise sauce and a side of spiced asparagus with bacon bits.

Well, at least dinner came out perfect. Almost. There’s only half of the hollandaise sauce left, but I think it will be enough.

I toss the used paper towels into the trashcan and head to my room. At the doorway, I pause. The corners of my lips turn up into a smile as I remember the last time Aaron was here.

He tucked me into bed. Not that he hasn’t done that before. The difference is that this time, he kissed me on the forehead. Just a simple kiss. It didn’t even last more than five seconds. And yet it left my body warm. Yes, my skin was still on fire from the sex, which turned out absolutely amazing in spite of the fact that my wrists were tied during a portion of it, but this was a different kind of heat, like the warmth of a sunset. My heart was fluttering, too. Not pounding like it had been, like it wanted to escape from my chest, but fluttering, like it could just fly and take me with it.

I think I went to sleep with a smile that night. I found myself in a good mood the next day, too, which was dampened when I learned that Aaron had suddenly taken off. But what can I do? He’s a businessman. He goes on business trips, sometimes on such short notice that he can’t tell his wife in person before he jumps on a plane.

I walk to my closet and pick out a new dress. After going through the rack three times, I pull out the sleeveless powder blue dress with buttons in front and a knee-length hem trimmed with lace. I change into it. When I’m done, I gaze at my reflection in the mirror.

Not as sexy as the black dress, but it still looks pretty. Hopefully, Aaron will like it.

He came back this morning. I barely saw him because he was rushing to go to the office and I was rushing to get to work.
